Ubud

Four visits across eight years. The land destination I would send someone to first, and the reason I keep routing Indonesian dive trips through Bali.

01Why Ubud

Landscape, craft and a week that resets you

Ubud is inland Bali: rice terraces, river gorges, temples, and a craft culture that has survived tourism better than it had any right to.

I use it as the front end of Indonesian dive trips. A week here before Lembeh or Raja Ampat is the difference between arriving tired and arriving ready.

It is also where the Craft & Culture axis earns its place on this site. Nothing in the dive rubric could measure what makes Ubud good.

A landscape people built and are still building. Ubud is worked ground: water moved by hand, ground shaped for rice, and a valley system you photograph from inside rather than from a lookout.

Scored on the same rubric as every other place here, and published whether or not the number flatters. One of the four came in under seventy; the lowest is fifty-five.

03The story
The story

River gorges cut a thousand feet below the road, and terraces shaped by hand over forty generations. You come around a bend at six in the morning and the mist is still sitting in the valley.
04What it asks of you

What it asks of you

Terrace work means early starts and low light in the gorges long after sunrise elsewhere. Roads are narrow and slower than any map suggests, and the walk down into a valley is always easier than the walk back out.

05When

The dry season, and the shoulder either side of it

April to May is when Ubud is at its best. Tap any month for what the water is actually doing.

Visibility, sea state, what is in the water and how much of it you can count on. The season turns at April and again after May.

06The money

Flights, transfers and what to sort first

Denpasar is the airport, and Ubud is roughly ninety minutes north depending on traffic, which can be considerable.

The evidence

What the week actually looked like

There are no photographs from this trip on the site yet. It was shot on film in 2000 and 2001 and the scans are not done; the scores and the conditions below are complete.

Dawn, and then wait until evening

Light scores an 8 rather than a 10 because the window is narrow. Dawn mist over the terraces is exceptional; midday is harsh and flat.

Craft and culture are the subject here: carving, weaving, ceremony, market life. It is a place to shoot people and process rather than landscape alone.

Crowd Pressure is the weak axis. The famous terraces and temples are busy, and getting there before six is the only real answer.

08The dives

What the week is built around

Six I dived more than once and would plan a week around, named as the resort names them.

01

Rice terraces

Dawn or nothing

Tegallalang and Jatiluwih. Both are extraordinary at six and unbearable at ten.

02

Temples

Ceremony and stone

Ask before photographing ceremony. The answer is usually yes, and asking is the point.

03

Craft villages

Making, up close

Carving, silver and weaving in the villages around Ubud.

04

River gorges

Green and vertical

The Ayung and Petanu valleys, best on foot.

05

Markets

Early

The produce market before dawn is the most photographable hour in Ubud.

06

Campuhan Ridge

The easy walk

Short, accessible, and best at first light.

09Who with

Who runs it

The reef doesn't change when you switch operators, but your experience does. To help you choose, each option is scored on the same five trip axes. The final rating is a simple equation: the baseline score of the reef plus the specific score of the operator.

11Who it suits

And who should cheerfully book elsewhere

The right-hand column is the useful one. Ubud asks something specific of you, and going for the wrong reason is an expensive way to find that out.

Book it if
