01Why Tofino

A long weekend that feels much bigger than three or four days

Tofino sits on the west coast of Vancouver Island, where rainforest, surf beaches, weather, food and Pacific drama all arrive in the same place. It is the one destination on this site I have never stopped going back to.

The appeal is not one beach, one hike or one restaurant. It is the rhythm. Wake up to fog. Walk the beach. Get coffee. Surf or hike. Warm up with food. Watch the weather shift. End the day with seafood, a beach fire, or rain on the roof.

That is why it works as a long weekend. You can do a lot and you do not have to force it. The best version leaves room for weather, appetite, tide and mood to decide the day.

The drive is part of it. Take the earliest ferry you can get, run north out of Nanaimo toward Parksville rather than the scenic route, and do your shopping on the way out of town. Once you turn for Port Alberni the options thin out. Stop at Cathedral Grove for half an hour among the old-growth Douglas firs. It costs almost nothing and it sets the tone: this trip is about slowing into the coast rather than arriving at it.

02The itinerary

Four days, and the order matters

This is the shape a lot of people have used. It is not a schedule, because Tofino punishes a schedule, but the order is deliberate: the drive earns the first meal, the big day sits in the middle where the weather has a chance to cooperate, and the last morning is spent somewhere other than Tofino so leaving does not feel like leaving.

Day 1

Ferry, forest, beach, tacos

Morning

Earliest ferry you can get. From Nanaimo take the highway north to Parksville rather than the scenic route, and do the shopping on the way out of town. After Port Alberni the options thin out.

Midday

Cathedral Grove. Half an hour among the old-growth Douglas firs is enough and it sets the tone. Fuel in Port Alberni; the road gets narrow and slow after that, and slower in rain.

Afternoon

Stop at Long Beach before town. It is a much better entrance to the coast than driving straight in, and one of the great Canadian beaches.

Evening

Tacofino for a seared tuna taco, then coffee and something sweet at Tofitian next door. Check in, sort surf rentals if you are surfing, and keep dinner easy: Wildside Grill and the salmon burger if you are near Mackenzie Beach.

Short on time. Cut this to a half day by taking a later ferry and skipping Cathedral Grove. You lose the best twenty minutes of the drive.

Day 2

The big day

Morning

Beach walk first, then coffee at Tofitian, timed for the muffin delivery. A bigger breakfast at Wildside works if the day is going to be physical.

Afternoon

The fork below. Whatever you choose, finish at Tofino Brewing: it is the right bridge between being outside all day and sitting down to dinner.

Evening

Wolf in the Fog, booked well in advance. This is the night to make dinner the event: spend the day outside, get cleaned up, let the meal be the reward.

Pick one, on the forecast rather than the plan
Surf

Take a lesson if you are new. The water is cold and the ocean is real, and local instruction makes the day better. Rent for several days rather than one. Usually cheaper, and the shops get busy.

Clean swell, wind under about 15 knots
Chesterman Beach, end to end

Walk the whole thing. Residential, surf and natural character in one stretch, and the best single hour for understanding what Tofino is.

Any weather. Better in fog
Radar Hill and Secret Beach

Radar Hill is a short stop with one of the better quick viewpoints. The trail out to Secret Beach is rootier and muddier than it looks.

Dry ground. Skip after heavy rain
Bomber Trail

Unofficial, muddy and navigation-sensitive. Proper footwear, food, water, and the judgement to turn round.

Only if you are equipped for it

Short on time. This is the day to keep. If the trip is three days, this one and day one are it.

Day 3

Slow Tofino

Morning

Breakfast at Common Loaf: the veggie burrito, upstairs if you can get the seat. Then Tonquin Park and the beach, best around lower tide when there is more of it to walk.

Afternoon

Whatever the weather and your legs allow: your own hotel beach, all of Chesterman, whale watching, bear watching, kayaking toward Meares Island, another surf, or a book. Lunch at Shelter if you want something easy.

Evening

Schooners: the Halibut Bowden Bay with Nami Nori oysters to start. Do not stay for dessert. Walk to Sobo for a margarita and the key lime pie, which was good enough that I had it at my wedding instead of cake.

The afternoon is the flexible one
Wildlife tour

Whales, bears, or kayaking to Meares. Turns a slow day into the biggest one of the trip.

Book the morning of, on the forecast
Do very little

A beach, a book, a nap. Tofino rewards surrender as much as ambition and most people under-use this option.

Rain, or tired legs

Short on time. The first day to cut if you only have three. You lose the slow one, which is the day people say they remember.

Day 4

Ucluelet, and the drive home

Morning

Repeat whichever morning worked: beach walk, coffee, one last surf check. Then leave Tofino and drive to Ucluelet.

Midday

A section of the Wild Pacific Trail. Rockier, more exposed and more dramatic than Tofino's sand; a shorter stretch takes about two hours. Lunch in town.

Afternoon

Kennedy Lake on the way out, especially if you want a freshwater rinse after surfing. Break the drive at Qualicum Beach or Parksville rather than running straight at Nanaimo, and do not cut the ferry window fine.

Short on time. Fold into day three by leaving Tofino at first light. You lose Ucluelet, which is the best contrast on the whole trip.

03If it turns

If the weather turns, and it will

Tofino changes hourly. This is the table I actually use, and it is the reason the itinerary above is a shape rather than a schedule.

What the morning looks likeWhat to do instead
Wind 15 kt or more, west or northPorteau-style exposed beaches are out. Go to Tonquin Park or walk Chesterman from the sheltered end.
Heavy rain overnightSkip Secret Beach and the Bomber Trail. The footing is the problem, not the rain. Long Beach is better in weather anyway.
FogThis is the good version. Beach walk, and bring the camera.
Big swellWatch it rather than enter it. Cox Bay from the headland, and check the surf report before booking a lesson you cannot use.
Everything shut, or you are tiredCathedral Grove, Kennedy Lake, or the brewery. All three are indoors-adjacent and none of them needs the weather to cooperate.
Sun, and you did not expect itDrop the plan. Surf or walk the whole of Chesterman; clear days here are rarer than the forecast suggests.
04Book first

Book these before anything else

The ferry

A reservation, and arrive inside the required window or the spot is released. On a long weekend that is the whole trip.

Wolf in the Fog

Books out in summer, on long weekends and through storm season. If the food is part of why you are going, do it before you leave home.

Surf rentals or a lesson

Cheaper for several days than one, and the shops fill up.

Somewhere to sleep

Choose the beach first and the property second. Mackenzie for families and value, Chesterman for the classic Tofino stretch, Cox Bay for surf and a resort feel, Ucluelet if budget matters or you want it quieter.

06The story
The story

Six metres of Pacific swell arriving against thousand-year-old rainforest, in January, with nobody else on the beach. The light lasts about four hours and every minute of it is worth standing in the rain for.
07What it asks of you

What it asks of you

The weather is the subject, which means the good days are the uncomfortable ones. Expect horizontal rain, six metres of swell and a beach you will have to yourself, and bring gear that survives salt spray for a week rather than an afternoon. Nothing here is technically hard: the entries are car parks and the trails are short. What it asks is that you are willing to stand in it for the four hours a day that are worth standing in.

Every season is a different version of the coast

September to March is when Tofino is at its best. Tap any month for what the water is actually doing.

Visibility, sea state, what is in the water and how much of it you can count on. The season turns at May and again after March.

09The money

Flights, transfers and what to sort first

Two things decide whether the weekend works: the ferry, and dinner. Book both.

Getting there
Earliest ferry to Nanaimo, then north to Parksville and west through Port Alberni. About five hours door to door from Vancouver.
Book the ferry
A reservation is worth it, and you must arrive inside the required window or the spot is released. On a long weekend that is the whole trip.
Book dinner
Wolf in the Fog is the reservation to build the trip around and it books out. If the food is part of why you are going, do it before you leave.
Fuel and groceries
On the way out of Nanaimo. After Port Alberni the choices narrow.
Expect weather
Rain gear, layers, footwear that can get wet, and enough slack in the plan that fog does not ruin it.
Respect the ocean
Surf, swell, cold water, drift logs and tide. The place is beautiful because it is powerful.

The best light on this site

Tofino scores a ten for Light and it is the only place here that does. Fog, storm, low winter sun, long shoulder hours at latitude, and weather that turns hourly.

The bad weather is the picture. Storm season is the most photographically interesting time to be there and the least comfortable, and those two facts are the same fact.

The wildlife is genuine: bears, whales, and wolves on the beaches if you are lucky and quiet. Most of the frames on this page are not wildlife, because most of Tofino is not: it is water, cedar, weather and the food you eat between them.

11The dives

What the weekend is built around

Six I dived more than once and would plan a long weekend around, named as the resort names them.

01

Long Beach

Essential scale

One of the great Canadian beaches, and a far better entrance to the coast than driving straight into town. Give yourself time to walk it rather than stop for a photograph.

02

Chesterman Beach

The beach walk

Walk the whole thing. Residential, surf and natural character in one stretch, and the best single hour for understanding what Tofino actually is.

03

Surfing

Cold-water classic

Central to Tofino's identity even if you only try it once. Take a lesson if you are new: the water is cold and the ocean is real. Rent for several days rather than one. It is usually cheaper and the shops get busy.

04

Radar Hill and Secret Beach

Quick view, rooty walk

Radar Hill is a short stop with one of the better viewpoints in the area. The trail out from there to Secret Beach is muddier and slower than it looks; skip it after heavy rain unless you are prepared for poor footing.

05

Wild Pacific Trail

Rugged contrast, in Ucluelet

Rockier and more exposed than Tofino's sandy beaches. A shorter section takes about two hours and it is the right way to spend the morning of the day you drive home.

06

Kennedy Lake

The freshwater stop

Useful if Tofino is fogged in or blown out, and the place surfers stop on the way home to rinse wetsuits in fresh water.

12Who with

Who runs it

The reef doesn't change when you switch operators, but your experience does. To help you choose, each option is scored on the same five trip axes. The final rating is a simple equation: the baseline score of the reef plus the specific score of the operator.

14Who it suits

And who should cheerfully book elsewhere

The right-hand column is the useful one. Tofino asks something specific of you, and going for the wrong reason is an expensive way to find that out.

Book it if

  • You want weather to be the subject. The days worth photographing here are the ones most people would call bad.
  • You will eat well and plan around it. Half of Tofino's value is on a plate.
  • You are happy with a loose day. The best afternoon here is a beach walk, a nap and one excellent meal.
  • You want somewhere memorable without leaving Canada. Very few places on this coast reward a long weekend this well.

Book elsewhere if

  • You want nightlife. There is none, and that is the point.
  • You want guaranteed sun. Summer is the easiest version and the busiest and dearest one.
  • You need a full schedule. Over-packing a Tofino weekend is the most common way to spoil it.
  • You will not get wet. Rain is not an interruption here, it is the climate.
